Amy Balkin, a San Fransisco-based artist, discussed her involvement as an artist with various EJ/superfund projects, including Area of Interest and Invisible-5. Amy’s works address property relations, environmental justice and equity in the context of climate change.

This lecture workshop led by StevenSteven T. Licardi explored the emergent intersections of ecological mental health and climate change through contemporary research and first-hand accounts of Steven’s work with families in the local region. He is an autistic/neurodivergent social worker, spoken word poet, artist, and science fiction writer working at the intersections of art and social policy. He travels internationally using the power of performance to create empathic dialogue around, to confront the realities of, and to assist communities in dismantling historical narratives of mental health and madness. In this event, Dr. Brandy Falkner, an assistant professor in Black Studies and Political Science at Virginia Tech, contrasted the responses of two communities to environmental justice issues - one in NY and one in NC, that launched the environmental justice movement.
